Japan Touchscreen Vending Machine - 47-inch screen

[[posterous-content:vzxqmcabzodxuEslzolw]]Time for us to admit another entrant into the hall of unnecessary, but cool inventions. Installed at Tokyo's Shinagawa Station yesterday, this latest spin on the vending machine dispenses with those silly windows unto what you're buying and furnishes its user with a 47-inch touch panel from which to make his (or her) selection. An embedded camera will recognize your gender and age, allowing the machine to recommend a beverage suitable to whatever stereotype is attached to your particular circumstances. And don't worry, it'll store your purchasing history too, so you can be freaked out by tailored ads every time you use it. 500 more of these WiMAX-equipped units are planned to be installed in and around Tokyo over the next two years, with operating company JR East expecting them to tally up 30 percent more sales than their analog brethren. More bling equals higher revenue? Sounds about right.

ckeck out the video below to see how it works.

Can Japan advance in South Africa Cup?

The Japan Soccer Team is going through a tough time in 2010 World Cup of South Africa. But they will actually fight for their last chance of advancing to Round 2, when facing Denmark in the 43th match of the tournament.
Both teams will need a win to advance, and it seems Japan has it all to win, but if they lose they will be eliminated from it. There are high hopes though, so maybe Japan can go well on this. So JAP-On is rooting for Japan to win the next match!! What about you? The match is only in a few hours, so let's cross our fingers and hope they make it! More information about the tournament here.

An enticing video of the wonders of Japan

Looking to go to Japan over the Summer?

How about an enticing video to see if it will make you wanting to go there! From the creator of the video, Brad Kremer:
Japan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This is my Japan. This is one of the many reasons why I love Japan. I shot this in many locations around Japan in the summer of 2009. Some of the location include Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu, and Ishizushisan. I started this as a personal project to try and capture the beauty that I see in Japan. It started as just that... But now that I have finished, I see it only as a beginning. This video, along with SAIJO MATSURI (Shown After The Jump!) is just the start of a much larger project that I have now decided to do.

Club Sega - One of the best gaming places of Japan

Introducing here to anyone who doesn't know or haven't seen, Club Sega is a place for arcade games and is considered one of the best in Japan, with tons of games like Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, UFO Catcher (considered by most the best of them), pinballs, gamble games and a majority of other arcade games.

There are many Club Segas around Japan, but the one favorited by otakus is the one in Akihabara, mostly because it's located right in the "heart" of the town and because of its larger structure. There are six floors full of games to be played in that one.

Club Sega is so famous that it is even depicted in the video game series Yakuza (Ryu Ga Gotoku). Below there is a video of Yakuza 3(recently released to the PlayStation2)that shows with details the main character going into Club Sega and playing a lot of games.    Certainly, Club Sega is one of THE gamers' places. A really nice place to spend your money and to enjoy yourself playing till you eyes burn.

Personal Trip: Bairro da Liberdade (Liba)

During last week I went to São Paulo with my family, and I wanted to go specially because of a certain place: it's the Bairro da Liberdade (literally Freedom neighborhood in portuguese), nicknamed Liba by brazilians. Well, thing is, this place has many japanese people who came from migration decades ago, and is where they set up their homes. They currently use it to spread some of their culture of commerce, and that's the part I love.

Liba is known by most brazilians as the source of japanese food, animes and mangas, as well as accessories and a bit of culture in overall. Unfortunately, coreans and chinese people have been coming to the same place and kind of mixing all up, putting the japanese people aside. But you still can find a lot of things related to Japan there. In there I got the opportunity to taste many Japan foods I always had the curiosity for: Gyoza, Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Miso Soup, Ramen and of course, Pocky!! And many different types of Pocky: Chocolate, strawberry, crunchy chocolate and crunchy strawberry. Hehe..:P Liba is a great source of Pocky. Now, if you go to Liba to find anime/manga related stuff, your place is SoGo Plaza Shopping.
It has 3 floors full of stores dedicated to anime and manga. Most stores contain gashapons (anime action figures), DVDs (from animes, tokusatsu, music artists, films, live actions and dramas), mangas (a lot of them), and minor accessories such as clothes and keyrings. Below are some pictures of products me and my sister took while in there:
Like I said it's really fun. It's worth to check if you are the "Otaku" kind of person. That's it of Liba for now. Maybe I can add some other stuff such as food places around there. Comments, anyone?

BJT - Meet the Lokuloku Pig!

Bizarre Japanese Toys is up for another toy introduction: The Lokuloku Pig.

What about having an adorable pig that retains its shape even after being completely squashed through to the ground? This toy costs only the equivalent of 3 dollars, and still it's one of the most amazing (and bizarre) in Japan. It is sold in many other colors.     Below is a video showing how it works. Really crazy. :P So how about getting yourself a Lokuloku pig? Source: Doobybrain.com

BJT(Bizarre Japanese Toys) - Meet the Hex Bug!

I'll start showing here a series of bizarre toys you can find in Japan, from the most technological to the most simple and crazy. As it will be too much things to show, and to not make such a long post, these posts will be separated into each for a particular object/toy, and it's also because it will be a recurring subject. Then these series will start with a really interesting one found in the internet: the Hex Bug.

The Hex Bug is a simple little robot designed as a bug. And not just designed!! He actually acts like a bug and has sensors that can react to touching and sounds, as well as detecting a barrier/wall and then turning themselves away from it. They are powered by two button cell batteries, and there's a lot of nanotechnology involved as you can see in the picture below.

These interesting little fellas were developed to have that "smart brain" factor, that most robotic inventions from Japan have these days. A lot of models were made, including ants, crabs, spiders, ladybugs and even two more called inchworms and nanos. They might look hideous as insects, but they can also be really adorable.

Comments, anyone? Think you can handle a Hex Bug in your home? XD

Japanese Innuendos: Are they really dangerous?

I was checking some news about a site criticizing a japanese game for its highly suggestive dialogues, which were labeled as innuendos. I know that it isn't probably too fine to talk about it, since there may be people under age visiting here, but I decided to discuss about how these kind of stuff is present in many things and sometimes we don't even notice. The innuendos,  to anyone who doesn't know what it means, it's a kind of insinuation, mostly sexually related or just suggesting some kind of romance or desire. For some personal reasons, japanese commercial area tends to show that (a lot). You can see them clearly in animes, noticing the big breasts of girls (some even highly exaggerating XD), some partial nudity scenes and some situations like the famous Hot Springs, where guys are always eager to peek/end up peeking on the girls naked. Well, thing is, almost all animes have this kind of thing added, in some just a tiny thing and in others a lot. And seeing that most that are directed to children also contain these kind of scenes, it intrigues me if it's any good to make these influences over kids. Of course, older people like me usually don't care about it, already knowing what it means and all. But for children to watch this it may be as bad as violence. Anyway, I just wanted to hear your opinions on this matter, and I'll probably post this subject on forums later. Below are some examples of these innuendos: two pictures, of Maya Natsume from Tenjho Tenge and of Tsunade from Naruto, and a video showing a scene of Ar Tonelico. Just a reminder: The following files don't contain any nudity or anything considered profanity or inappropriate, but their content are highly suggestive. You have been warned.
